Photographs of St Francois State Park
St Francois State Park is located south of St Louis near the old mining region of Missouri. The dolomite hills are what I consider a gateway to the northern border of the St Francois Mountains in the Missouri Ozarks. Driving into the region from the north, the rolliing hills give a sample of what is to be found further south. The Big River runs along its southern border and the park hosts Coonville Creek Natural Area within its boundaries. Clear flowing Coonville Creek flows through Mooner’s Hollow, a valley which owes its namesake to the many moonshine stills once situated in the area. The three hiking trails within the park possess a nice diversity for such a small area. In springtime, bluebells fill the woodlands along the Big River turning the forest into another world.
