Photographs of Venice in Black and White - Canals and Scenes From Piazza San Marco

Venice, the city of romance, has a timeless feel and what better way to capture this than with black and white photography. Most of these images were taken on my first visit to Venice in 1998 and captured with Ilford black and white film and an old Contax RTS with fixed lenses. No auto-focus for me back then. The images of children feeding the pigeons in Piazza San Marco capture the essence of "la dolce vita".

Two Docked Gondolas
Two Docked Gondolas

Early morning, a quiet canal and gondolas docked and waiting for the day's activity... this is Venice.

Curly Top in Piazza San Marco
Curly Top in Piazza San Marco

I was captivated with the children as they interacted with the pigeons in Piazza San Marco. The joy in this curly headed girl's face pretty much sums it up. This image was captured on Ilford XP2 film with a Zeiss 135mm fixed lens, no auto focus on my cameras back then.

Bridge of Sighs in Black and White
Bridge of Sighs in Black and White

The Bridge of Sighs is truly an iconic landmark of Venice and a black and white presentation gives it a timeless feel. The blur from a slow shutter speed gives the canal reflections a softness.

Who's Feeding Whom
Who's Feeding Whom

I found this little girl's expression humorous and the context begged the question that has become the title of this image. This image was captured on Ilford XP2 film with a Zeiss 135mm fixed lens, no auto focus on my cameras back then.

Quiet Canal and Boat in Venice

This black and white photograph has been scanned and then toned and softened digitally to capture the romantic feel of Venice while still retaining the fell of the original black and white image. It was originally captured on Ilford XP2 film with a my trusted old Contax RTS camera.

Girl Feediing Pigeons in Piazza San Marco

I captured a series of images of this girl as she interacted with the pigeons. In this image the white bird added just the right contrast. This image was captured on Ilford XP2 film with a Zeiss 135mm fixed lens, no auto focus on my cameras back then.

Wedding in Piazza San Marco Venice
Wedding in Piazza San Marco Venice

While photographing the children in Piazza San Marco I spied a couple of newly weds having their photos taken and slipped in one of my own. What a great place to have your weddings pics. This image was captured on Ilford XP2 film with a Zeiss 135mm fixed lens, no auto focus on my cameras back then.

Another in the series of images of this girl with the pigeons. I don't recall what prompted this gesture and expression but I believe it had to do with some pigeons taking flight. This image was captured on Ilford XP2 film with a Zeiss 135mm fixed lens, no auto focus on my cameras back then.

In Venice there is no shortage of canals and gondolas awaiting the capture of their portrait.

Photographs of Spain in Black and White - Architecture - Alcazar, Sevilla, Toledo

Unquestionably, black and white is an apropos medium for architecture photography and what better way to capture the intricate Moorish architecture of Spain. Columns and arches surround courtyards and colonnades casting shadows and creating visual energy which is enhanced with black and white.

Alcazar Courtyard and Fountain

The pattern on the tile floor of this courtyard translates well into black and white, complementing the fountain and architectural elements of the entry gate.

Alcazar Column Arches and Tile
Alcazar Column Arches and Tile

The beauty of Moorish architecture does not lie in the color combinations alone as this image shows. Tonality and patterns are involved as well. Strip away the color and the intricate beauty can still be seen.

I was drawn by the interplay of light and shadows among these arched columns.

Photographs of Tuscany in Black and White

Tuscany, its familiar scenery has become almost synonymous with Italy itself! Tuscan farms, rolling hills and cypress trees all characterize this region in the heart of Italy. But there is something about the quality of light on the landscape that makes it a special place for photographers. I visited the region once briefly in 1998 on my first trip to Italy and briefly again in 2005. But it was not until the fall of 2014 when I had time to explore the region with a car for a week that I truly saw the real character of the place.

Although the changing colors can be fundamental to the composition of many photographs of Tuscany; it is the light, shadows and tonalities that are the true elements. When a scene is reduced to black and white, the structural bare bones are these elements.

In this collection of images, I have tried to capture the subtle tonalities and interplay of light and shadows on the land. Some of these images were taken years ago with black and white film and others are more recent and are the product of digital conversion of images captured in color. In either case, I have tried to convey the feel of that special quality of light that is uniquely Tuscany.

Farmhouse Surrounded by Cypress Trees in Tuscany
Farmhouse Surrounded by Cypress Trees in Tuscany

This is classic Tuscany. Cypress trees lining a winding road to a farmhouse on a hill. Although it may appear that these scenes are so common that it is easy to create good images, such is not the case. Finding the right vantage point, with the right light and that is accessable is not as easy as it would seem.

Little Chapel On a Hill in Tuscany
Little Chapel On a Hill in Tuscany

This little chapel is on the main road between San Quirico and Pienza. It is often photographed and there is a small pull off. However, it still requires the right light and atmosphere to capture a unique image.

Tuscan Farms in Morning Light

Morning light and shadows create ever changing patterns across the landscape as in this scene in the Val d'Orcia.

The Winding Tuscan Lane
The Winding Tuscan Lane

The winding road to La Foce is at the southern end of Tuscany. There are a number of places from which to photograph this road but again, getting the light right is a key to success.

Solitary Cypress On a Ridge in Tuscany
Solitary Cypress On a Ridge in Tuscany

I was in awe as I would wander out into the stark barren hills. Clouds would roll across the sky casting shadows and creating mood. And off in the distance would be the characteristic cypress trees standing as sentinels on the ridges.

There is great distance between the hills and valleys which become defined layers as haze and fog set them apart.

Furrowed Fields in Tuscany
Furrowed Fields in Tuscany

Visiting Tuscany in the fall means that the fields have been harvested and plowed under, leaving contours in the brown dirt. The low light of the morning sun created a shadow on this furrow which wound through the hills adding an element of interest to this composition.

Whether photographed from above or below, each farmhouse has its unique look, but the vantage point can make a big difference in the composition.

This home was in a quiet little piazza in the hill town of Radicofani. It is off the beaten path and apparently not frequented by tourists.

Cluster of Olive Trees in Tuscany
Cluster of Olive Trees in Tuscany

We passed this cluster of olive trees growing on a hillside in an olive grove as we walked from a car park into the hill town of Montichiello. Most of the hill towns are limited to pedestrian traffic and tourists have to park In a public lot outside the told town and walk in. Some of the walks in can be fairly steep but we like the stroll.

Old Abandoned Farm In Val d'Orcia Tuscany
Old Abandoned Farm In Val d'Orcia Tuscany

I came across this abandoned farmhouse one morning as it was raining. Suddenly the rain let up and clouds rolled across the great expanse of the sky very quickly. There was a constant change of light and I was consumed with the ever changing scene.

Stone Farm Buildings On a Windswept Hill in Tuscany
Stone Farm Buildings On a Windswept Hill in Tuscany

These old abandoned farm buildings were rather ordinary and I had driven by them several times. However, on this day it was the late afternoon - early evening light that captured my eye as I drove by. I quickly turned around and drove back to the scene, unpacked my equipment and began to photograph.

The thin little sliver of road in this image helps to anchor the leading lines in the composition that are created by tonal variations in the landscape.

The medieval hill town of Barga lies in the northern region of Tuscany and the lanes are steep and narrow. The old town was quiet and pleasant when we visited.

Montefioralle was a quiet hill town in the Chianti region which is in northeastern Tuscany. The drive up to and beyond the town was steep and the road was narrow. It was my wife's pick as she had read about the town and wanted to visit, however she found that the drive tested her bravery.

We left Montepulciano and after crossing the valley, as we were driving away, I noticed the beautiful sky from the distant hill. I had to find a place to park and walk back seeking a vantage point. I found several and beganphotographing until some dogs began to chase me away.

Photographs of France in Black and White

Old stone villages, architecture, the wine culture, all of these characterize the diversity of France and the colors of the various regions reflect that diversity as well. However, the light and shadows, the textures and tones - These are the substance and backbone that distinguish the scenery. What better way to present the tones and textures of France than in black and white.

Photographs of Italy in Black and White

I have visited Italy seven times. My first visit was in 1998 on a whirlwind tour of France and Italy. When I began visiting Italy I was shooting film and carried two camera bodies, one loaded with color film and one with black and white.

My preferred black and white films were Ilfrod products and I used both the Delta line and XP2 , which was a chromogenic film. I liked the surprise that came from developing XP2 because it created color cast variations, thus it did not produce pure black and white images (although it could be processed as black and white).

Of course with the advent of digital technology that has changed. I have scanned some of my favorite black and white film images but there is more to come. I now print the black and whites digitally and am pleased with the way the print. Now I no longer carry two bodies, but I still think and expose differently for images I conceive to be black and white presentations.

I still love the look of black and white and produce images in that genre. The old school hasn't been discarded, only improved on with age and technology.

Sparse Cypress and Hills in Tuscany
Sparse Cypress and Hills in Tuscany

The austere Tuscan landscape of the Crete Senese is quite dramatic. The sparse cypress trees among the hills are renowned, but it was the light that really captivated me. Sun, clouds and shadows rolled across the landscape and it was in constant change. These are the elements that can create a dramatic black and white image.

Verona is one of my favorite cities in Italy. Piazza Erbe in Verona is surrounded by buildings with wonderful old deteriorating frescoes. The Val d'Aosta in northwestern Italy is host to quite a few castles. They served as a defense from invading armies coming over the Alps. I visited Val d'Aosta in the fall of 2000. This image was captured on Ilford black and white film. My attention was drawn to the shadows cast on the castle by the strong side lighting against the mountains in the background. I have digitally toned this image for some added interest.

Photographs of Alsace in Black and White

Alsace - That buffer zone between France and Germany. The character of the region certainly reflects the identity crises it has faced over the centuries as it has transitioned back and forth between the rulers of both countries. Bilingual signs are common and the food is a wonderful blending of these two cultural cuisines. The resulting blend of character is both charming and likeable.

The abandoned abbey at Murbach in Alsace France is situated in a picturesque location. The wooded valley of this French landscape is peaceful and quiet. According to history that was the source of its demise. The monks found the solitude not to their liking. They preferred being located closer to larger town and used a perpetual renovation project as the excuse for moving out. That was centuries ago and it has remained abandoned to this day.

Photographs of the Alps in Black and White - Italy and Germany

Alpine meadows, mountain streams and the majestic peaks of the Alps... the Alps dominate the European landscape in many countries. Hiking through the mountains can be glorious. What better way to present their beauty than in black and white. I have enjoyed visiting them on several occasions.

Within the Val d'Aosta lies Gran Paradiso National Park in northwest Italy and a hike through the Val di Cogne within this park is spectacular. The Dolomites of northwest Italy are legendary and hiking the vast expanse of the alpine meadow Alpi di Suissi humbles one as you are dwarfed in the grand landscape. The Bavarian Alps too have their own unique beauty. These images were produced from various trips to Europe.
